IBHS, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, created the FORTIFIED system to offer property owners greater protection against storm damage. A FORTIFIED Roof uses only materials that have been tested an approved by the engineers at IBHS as installed by their approved methods. One difference is that fortified roofs include ring shank nails that are harder for winds to lift and pull out of the roof deck. Another difference between a fortified roof and a standard roof is that the entire roof deck gets re-nailed with better framing nails and a lot more of them. Even the joints between the decking boards must be sealed with either flashing tape and underlayment, two layers of underlayment, or fully adhered membrane over the whole decking surface. These methods are even beyond those prescribed by the Texas Department of Insurance for WPI-8 certification.

Looking for the best local FORTIFIED Roofing Company? As a certified FORTIFIED roofer, our Roofing Supervisor is trained, tested, and approved by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. With a reputation for installing storm-ready roofs, Elite Roofers, is set apart from the majority of roofers. Choose the FORTIFIED standard upgrade package, based on decades of research by IBHS, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, to ensure your roof is built on proven methods and materials that withstand severe weather. You can have confidence that Elite Roofers will perform your roof installation to the exacting standards of IBHS FORTIFIED, when you choose the FORTIFIED standard roof package. Roofing should be done by highly trained and certified roofing installers and that's what you'll get with Elite Roofers and IBHS FORTIFIED.

FORTIFIED Roof by IBHS is the higher standard for roof installation. A fortified roof meets stricter standards than those of any individual roofing manufacturer or building code. Instead, the IBHS has created tighter specific requirements that have been tested for real-life weather conditions. All the shingles installed in a fortified roof use hot dipped galvanized ring-shank nails, which hold into the roof deck stronger than traditional smooth-shank nails, and more nails are used than required by any roofing manufacturer. Additionally the roof sheathing is re-nailed with significantly decreased space between nails (more nails per board) and weatherproof seam-tape is applied over every roof decking joint. This is all photo-documented, then verified by a FORTIFIED certified evaluator.

The process by which the roof installation is verified to be compliant with fortified standards is more stringent and detailed than what typical home inspection includes. It's also far more detailed than what HOA's or city permitting inspectors look for on a roof. In fact, the once the roof replacement begins, an IBHS certified fortitifed evaluator must inspect the structural members, roof deck, and roof covering system. Only approved fasteners may be used on the deck and roof covering, strict methods of underlayment installation are required to help prevent water intrusion if shingles are lost during a storm.
The IBHS certified fortified evaluator is a qualified person who has passed IBHS tests, is certified by IBHS, and adheres to stringent processes for inspecting and documenting the roof installation. The evaluator is a third party, in other words, they do not work for your roofer, they would be hired by you to document the roof replacement and submit documentation to IBHS for certification of your fortified roof system.

IBHS previously listed all fortified providers on a convenient and easy to navigate listing, and you could even find individual listings of certfied fortified provider companies. Currently, IBHS has allowed a third party called, Profile Gorilla, to take over their provider site and it seems that the function for verifying a provider is not working. Further, they ask you to enter all your information into their system so they can send it to roofing providers, instead of simply allowing you to browse and choose on your own. Hopefully they offer a better way soon.

As a FORTIFIED Certified Roofer, Elite Roofers offers the exclusive FORTIFED Roof, giving homeowners the opportunity to seek even larger discounts on their premiums (ask your insurance agent for details) and to better protect their home against storm damage. The IBHS has scientifically tested the performance of each approved material and installation method used on a FORTIFIED Roof. More and more insurance companies are offering larger discounts and some agents referring their clients to only a FORTIFIED certified roofer. Most roofers cannot offer to install your roof under this program.
At Elite Roofers, we offer the complete IBHS FORTIFIED roofing system, where not only are each component engineered to work together, but the design has been tested to outperform and outlast other roof system installations. Working with FORTIFIED approved CertainTeed products allows us to offer an upgraded version of the Integrity Roof System®. With CertainTeed roofing materials, IBHS FORTIFIED installation methods, and Elite Roofers installing your roof, you can have peace of mind about your roof for years to come.

Many consider installing an IBHS FORTIFIED Roof because it may mean preventing water damage inside their home or business, when heavy storms would tear-off other roofs and allow water to enter the property. Others choose a FORTIFIED roof because of the incentives and discounts offered by their insurance carriers. Some agents claim savings on premiums as much as 50% lower than the premiums paid for a similar policy without a FORTIFIED roof. It might be worth asking your insurance agent if a FORTIFIED roof could save you money on your insurance policy.
