Roofing Accessories

What are Roofing Accessories?

A roof is made up of more than just shingles. It requires underlayment, nails, ridge cap, drip edge, and a variety of flashing, that when installed properly create a complete roofing system that will last for many years to come. Whatever your goals for your new roof or roof repair, choosing the appropriate accessories can help your roof last longer, look better, and have overall improved performance. When getting a roof quote, some of the important accessories to look for are:

  • Ridge Cap (also called Hip & Ridge)
  • Ventilation
  • Underlayment
  • Drip Edge
  • Pipe Flashings (also called pipe jack boots or pipe jacks)
  • Type B Gas Vent Flashing (also called base, collar, and cap)
  • Starter Shingles

Roof & Attic Ventilation

Roofing Ventilation Products

Proper attic ventilation is key to the longevity of your roof system. Not only that, but it also helps prevent moisture build-up in an otherwise humid attic space. With trained and certified attic ventilation professionals on staff, Elite Roofers can help you choose the right solution for venting your attic space. The intake is as important as the exhaust and the two should be in balance. And for attics that have been sealed with foam, there is not supposed to be any ventilation at all. As roofs and attics come in many different shapes and sizes, we refer to the applicable building codes and the instructions from the roofing materials manufacturers to ensure that we offer the appropriate solution for your home. This could mean:

  • Ridge Vents
  • Slant Back Vents
  • Domed Vents
  • Whirly Bird Vents
  • Powered Attic Fans
  • Soffit Vents
  • Under-shingle Vents

Underlayment - Leak Barriers

Roofing Underlayment

A complete roof system requires underlayment to be installed between the roof deck and the shingles. Underlayment is water-resistant or waterproof and can be the difference between allowing water into your home or completely preventing a leak. Depending on your local climate, the correct underlayment may also be important for preventing leaks from ice and snow buildup on the roof. For East Texas, Houston and surrounding areas, the underlayment is particularly important for preventing leaks from wind driven rain. However, not all roofers install the same kinds of underlayment, and even when the proper underlayment is used, it may not be installed in all the right areas. Waterproofing underlayment (ice & water shield) is applied to the valleys, by almost all roofers. It is required by the manufacturer to have waterproofing underlayment installed along the rake walls, along the eaves, at any flashing, at any penetrations (pipes), and on low slopes (> 2:12 to < 4:12). Choosing the appropriate underlayment and installing it correctly easily saves homeowners from future leaks.

Drip Edge

Drip Edge - Eave and Rake Flashing

Depending on the area where you live, there may be different sizes and types of drip edge required for roof installation. Many builders neglect to install drip edge, if the local inspectors do not enforce drip edge as being required by building codes. Most roofing materials manufacturers do require drip edge along the eaves and rakes of the roof (the entire perimeter). In areas along the coast, the state of Texas requires that roofs be inspected by the Texas Department of Insurance in order to get a WPI-8 certificate, allowing homeowners to get windstorm insurance.  At Elite Roofers, we install the 2" drip edge as a standard, with type DL used on any luxury roofs. 1.5" drip edge, while common on builder grade homes, is no longer up to code*. Galvanized drip edge, while less expensive than pre-painted, is used by some roofers, but we prefer the baked enamel painted drip edge for durability and aesthetic appeal.

  • 1.5" Drip Edge
  • 2" Drip Edge
  • Type DL Drip Edge
  • 4x4 Drip Edge (for Low Slopes)
  • TDI Windstorm Compliant Drip Edge

Pipe Flashing - Boots

Plastic Base Rubber Pipe Jack Boot

Plastic Base Rubber Pipe Jack Boot

These are very common on builder grade and low cost roof replacements. The plastic does not handle heat as well as a metal base and we often receive calls from homeowners looking to replace this type of pipe jack. The rubber around the pipe also tends to wear out and lead to leaks, over time.

This is not something we install on any roof replacement.

Metal Base Rubber Pipe Jack Boot

Metal Base Rubber Pipe Jack Boot

The metal base is an improvement from the plastic base, but the rubber around the pipe is still not something we can recommend, as the problems we see with the rubber are prone to causing leaks.

This is not something we install on any roof replacement.

Lead Pipe Jack Boot

Lead Pipe Jack Boot

This is the most commonly installed pipe jack boot by professional roof replacement contractors. Known for its durability and versatility, the lead pipe jack boot tends to outlast and out perform other pipe jack boots. We install these on a majority of roof replacements, along with a coat of high-temperature resistant paint.

Bullet Boot

Bullet Boot

The bullet boot is relatively new to the roofing industry, constructed of flexible UV resistant rubber thermoplastic elastomer, and is designed to go inside and outside of the PVC pipe. Each bullet boot includes a protective screen designed to prevent critters from entering the vent. This type of pipe jack boot is preferred by some builders as an upgrade from standard rubber boots.

Rubber Pipe Collar
Rain Repair Collar

Rain Repair Collar

Rubber pipe collars are typically used as a temporary and inexpensive repair option on leaking pipe jack boots. Some roofers will install these on top of a standard rubber pipe jack boot to offer a second layer of protection.

Type B Gas Vent Flashing - Heater Vents

Through-roof heater vent pipe, also known as Type B Gas Vent for furnace or water heater.

Roof Flashing for Heater Vents

On most homes, a double walled flue pipe for a type B gas vent is connected to a gas powered water heater or furnace, for combustion exhaust. The water heater will typically have a 3" vent pipe exiting through the roof and a furnace typically uses a 4" vent pipe. Building code requirements for heater vent exhaust dictate that the exhaust should terminate outside and not into an attic or crawlspace.

At Elite Roofers, we inspect the attic before and after each roof replacement, to identify any issues with the heater exhaust. Replacement of the adjustable base flashing, storm collar, and vent cap are are included in our roof replacement process. As with any roof penetration, pipes like these are vulnerable to leaks. As such, during roof replacement, when the adjustable base is removed, we install a self-sealing waterproofing layer on the adjacent roof decking. This is also an area we re-seal and paint as part of our roof maintenance plans, such as a roof tune-up.

Flashing for heater vents includes:

  • Base
  • Collar
  • Cap
